This idyllic North Cornwall hot spot is located not far from Padstow, to the North of Harlyn Bay and the South of Trevose Head. There are good directions following the windy country roads that take you down to the bay, where you’ll find a large car park with all day parking tickets available through Trevone Bay’s beach store and café.

The Marine Conservation Society Good Beach Guide 2014 recommends a visit to Trevone simply for its excellent water quality, which was definitely visible from the flat turquoise mill pond that greeted me across the horizon on the drive down the hill into the bay. A seasonal dog ban is in place here, but pooches are more than welcome between 30th September and Easter Sunday. Follow the cliffs to the north east for great walks and spectacular scenery to Hawkers Cove and the Camel Estuary, but beware the large blow hole on the top of the cliffs – those with a height disposition may want to stand back!

I was lucky enough to pop down to have a chat Graham, who runs Trevone Beach Stores, on a beautiful sunny day when the tide was on its way out and the surrounding cliffs sheltered the gently shelving sandy beach that a few families were setting up camp for the day on. The sea was inviting novice paddle boarders to have a go, children were ready with their nets in hand to catch whatever they could, and the alcoves in the cliffs looked like the perfect place to sit and watch the world go by. I even dipped my feet in the sun warmed sandy pools teeming with shoals of small fish left behind by the outgoing tide.

The café was busy with tables of customers nattering away over coffees and snacks, revelling in the September sunshine and people were browsing the store’s shelves that are stocked high with everything you could possibly imagine needing on a day trip to the beach. There are beach hats, beach towels, newspapers and magazines to browse while lazing in the sun and for the more adventurous? Why not hire a paddle board, get a wetsuit and head out on to the water! Of course there are also lots of gifts and goodies to take away as souvenirs of your time in Cornwall as well.

Trevone beach stores is sat right above the beach situated on the edge of the car park – a perfect location to grab some lunch and an ice cream before heading back down to explore the sandy shores some more. This summer has been a one great for Trevone, “We’ve had a great season actually, a bit of a dip with the worse weather in  August but this sunshine is making up for it now. We’re going to keep ourselves open while it continues.” explained Graham, who has run the family owned store for 21 years.

On the subject of stocking Callestick Farm ice cream Graham said “The ice cream has been going really well – our front runners have definitely been Honeycomb and Bubblegum with the youngsters, but now they’re back at school we’ve seen a rise in Jamaican Rum and Raisin sales!”

If he could create any flavour in the world Graham would make a Cranberry and Passion fruit ice cream, and who would he share it with? Only the beautiful Angelina Jolie – to which his wife Heidi decided she was off to find Hugh Jackman!
